Growing a national network from the ground up: The Advancement Strategic Communicators Network
This panel will share how we built a national professional network: a community of major gift proposal communicators sharing ideas, resources, and solutions that move all of our collective work forward. We’ll also forecast plans for our network’s future growth as we continue to share proposal trends and best practices, benchmark impact, and form resource subgroups around shared interests and expertise.
Our panel includes three fundraising communication leads who direct philanthropic proposal services teams at our respective research universities: the University of California, Davis; the University of Miami; and Northwestern University. Our teams have become an invaluable resource and a sounding board to each other, and we saw a valuable opportunity to scale up this collaboration by building a national network of colleagues doing similar work—and facing similar challenges—at peer institutions across the country.
While professional affinity groups exist for college marketing communicators, corporate and foundation grant writers, and other specialized groups of higher education communicators, no comparable group previously existed for philanthropic proposal writers—so we decided to help create one. Since launching the Advancement Strategic Communicators (ASC) Network in 2022, we’ve grown rapidly from a small group of approximately 20 interested colleagues into a robust network of 140+ members representing more than 85 public and private universities in 38 states. We meet quarterly to exchange ideas, mutual challenges and best practices, and we’re growing and expanding in new directions all the time.

Paying it forward: students supporting alumnae reunions
Reunions are a great way to show students that college is more than four years – it's for life! Engaging student workers to support reunions can help make less work for you, demonstrate to students the value of lifelong engagement (or: model for students what alumnae engagement can look like), and provide a more meaningful experience for alumnae/i.
This session will include an overview of how to recruit, train, and leverage a student staff to support and create meaningful experiences during reunion. Templates and best practices will be shared, and time will be given to brainstorm ideas and workshop scenarios for student engagement in your own reunion programs.

Integrated Talent Management: The Secret Sauce to Building & Sustaining Success for Any Institution
As the field of institutional advancement matures, as operations grow in complexity, and as the expectations of advancement professionals evolve, it behooves organizations to continually respond and adapt in order to ensure relevance and effectiveness. Over the past 10 years, NC State has done just that. We’ve developed structures, built best practices and productive relationships in a decentralized environment that together, through blood, sweat and yes, even some tears, have enabled the advancement team to thrive. While we are proud of the culture that’s been established, it’s one that we don’t take for granted and work hard to sustain. We believe some of the lessons we’ve learned along the way, specifically in areas related to talent acquisition and development, HR and finance, as well as strategic planning and organizational management, are worth sharing and hopefully they can be helpful for other organizations too!

Closing Keynote and Final Thoughts: Discover the Power of Empathy and Emotional Intelligence in Leadership
In 2007, Josef successfully earned his BA degree in Sociology from Concordia University. His primary aspiration was to study marketing at the John Molson School of Business, but unfortunately, his grades did not meet the requirements for acceptance into the program. Undeterred, at the age of 24 and with limited experience, Josef took matters into his own hands and established Design Shopp International, a web and digital marketing agency based in Montreal. With a global team, Design Shopp International helps its marketing clients thrive. Now, the team generates over $1.5 billion yearly for its marketing client across the globe.
In his leadership and motivation seminars, Josef emphasizes empathy and emotional intelligence (EQ) as crucial elements of effective leadership. By sharing his personal experiences, he strives to inspire individuals from diverse backgrounds, including business, education, public speaking, and working with underserved communities. No matter the audience, whether it’s underserved youth or CEOs of Fortune 500 companies, Josef's approach remains consistent with the same fundamental principles. He believes that the keys to success lie in building strong human connections, nurturing a clear purpose, and overcoming personal obstacles.
Speakers: Josef Azam, Founder, Design Shopp
