Pop, Fizz, Clink! Creating memorable donor events beyond the champagne toast
In the span of just over a month, the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia reached a $400m campaign milestone, opened a new Kimpton hotel on campus, renovated and reopened Smith Alumni Hall, and dedicated 13 donor-named spaces. Engagement professionals from the Darden School of Business will share the strategies and tactics for developing high-impact events and donor recognition in a challenging environment, using Spring 2023 as a road map. Participants will engage in activities to identify opportunities for ‘surprise and delight’ moments and for utilizing students and faculty in their stewardship program. This session is ideal for mid-career professionals and new advancement professionals whose institutions are embarking on a campaign, ending a campaign, planning a groundbreaking, or looking for creative ways to revitalize their signature donor celebrations and level up their donor recognition. Building a Team and Team-Building: How We Tripled our Alumni Engagement Staff and Used the Enneagram to Enhance Connections Among New Team Members
Restructuring a department is exciting and daunting. In this session we’ll share our experience with restructuring twice in two years. We’ll discuss how we restructured strategically as we were asked to do more with less, considering the long-term goals of the department, division, and university. We’ll explore how we decided which roles we needed to create and fill, how we selected candidates, and how we built a cohesive team as we tripled our number of staff. We’ll discuss what we did well that we carried into a second restructuring, and what we learned from and chose to do differently. We’ll spend time focusing specifically on team-building and using the Enneagram as a tool to enhance positive, productive relationships among team members. Participants will leave the session with strategies to implement with their own teams whether they’re growing, restructuring, or simply looking to enhance communication and collaboration within an existing team.

Generative AI in Higher Ed | Embrace Our Robot Overlords
Generative AI is a hot topic in higher education for the wrong reasons — pathways to cheat for students, the idea that we're automating critical thinking and writing skills and the worry that some in our industry might lose our jobs to robots (who work cheaper and require fewer vacation days). From ChatGPT to art-generating programs like Midjourney, this session looks at how developing Generative AI skills will not only help your job in marketing and communications (as well as alumni relations and admissions), but also make a more well-rounded communicator.

Increasing PR productivity beyond small shop capacity, Case study of Northwest Mississippi Community College
What does the modern marking and communications workload look like in a small shop? Is it possible to work beyond the limits of what we once knew was possible? Each press release that Northwest Mississippi Community College drops now reaches the appropriate audiences: students, parents, local media based on hometown, local elected officials based on hometown, and local high schools. Helping the right stories get to the right inboxes is powerful. Recognizing students' achievements and notifying the college's news agencies is now efficient, easily completed by a single employee, and is not an extra, unuseful email in the local media's inbox. The reach generated by stories using Merit's software is exponentially greater than email or phone calls. The software generates reports on social media, newspaper, and television traffic on the college's press and provides a unique ROI for college employees whose daily work is promotion and press releases.

Philanthropy Education Week: A Case Study in Laying a Strong Foundation for Annual Giving
A strong student philanthropy education program creates opportunities to engage students, expand campus partnerships, and steward donors. W&L's undergraduate philanthropy initiative builds a pipeline to a successful senior gift and robust volunteer performance culminating in $10 million raised for the Annual Fund. FY23 provided the opportunity to revitalize student philanthropy in connection with lifelong engagement. In March 2023, the Washington and Lee Annual Giving team executed a four-day program highlighting the impact of philanthropy on student experience. Leaders across campus, from the Senior Gift Committee to the Career Office, partnered to present fun and focused philanthropy events, engaging 30% of our student body.
In this case study, we will discuss our objectives, methods, and takeaways. Attendees will acquire tools to conduct a multi-day philanthropy education event with student buy-in, strong campus partners, and substantive programming. The group will discuss ways to expand the event’s impact beyond campus to engage alumni, parents, and friends.

The Key to Successful Prospect Development: Transforming Your Shop from Policing to Partnership
When discussing trends and best practices in prospect development, the focus is predominately on the technical aspect of the work, often including buzzwords such as data analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. The human component of prospect development is key to an effective team and should be underscored. Cultivating strong relationships and building trust with fundraisers and leadership is integral to institutional success. Prospect development should embrace their role as subject matter experts who, in partnership with fundraisers, foster collaboration and creatively advance the work. Join us to hear how the UCF Advancement prospect development team has implemented specific practices to transform our culture from reactive policing to proactive partnership, directly impacting the work of the fundraisers and dollars raised for the organization.
