Voices: Speaking, Listening, Sharing — Spotlight on Podcasts

“We just started a new podcast, Beyond the Brown & Gold. Both myself and another colleague in advancement were radio, television, and film majors at our university with experience in being on air, so we host it. We’re partnering with our school’s radio station. It’s a win-win because it generates content for the station and we get to highlight alumni.” –Jessica Kanady, Assistant Director of Alumni Engagement, Rowan University, New Jersey, U.S.

MAKING IT BIG: About to go into its fifth season, Making It Big in 30 Minutes features alumni hosts and guests and is a great marketing tool for Emerson College.
“I created and produce Emerson’s alumni podcast, Making It Big in 30 Minutes, that’s about to go into its fifth season. We do two, eight-episode seasons per year. It’s definitely a lot of work but it’s been an incredible experience for our alumni hosts and guests, and a great marketing tool for admissions, parents and families, donor relations, and more. I brought this project from a wee idea I had after attending a CASE conference to five seasons of a podcast!” –Rebecca Glucklich, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations, Emerson College, Massachusetts, U.S.

“As a podcast about building a better society by embracing fresh perspectives and new ideas, Reframe quickly found its footing by featuring prominent faculty and alumni who were already working on important social and cultural issues. On Reframe we consciously created a welcoming and low-risk environment [and we] express an authentic interest in our faculty and alumni’s work. [Over time, faculty and alumni] started to have more fun with the project. They became more comfortable discussing ideas in a public forum, eager to tell us about their achievements, excited to pitch us new show topics, and even more willing to do external interviews with other media. It turned into evergreen content for us, media training for the guests, relationship building for the division, and a thought leadership vehicle for the university.” –James Loy, Writer/Editor, Miami University, Ohio, U.S.

“We started a podcast called It Takes a Viking. We record on either Zoom or StreamYard and use the video recordings to share on socials, from our YouTube page. It gets the job done in sharing stories for us. We send guests a little something for participating after the interview is over.” –Michael Mitchell, Assistant Director, Alumni Relations, Salem State University, Massachusetts, U.S.

THE HANDOFF: The College Handoff connects undergraduate nursing students at BYU and alumni who share career information and nursing insight.
“With COVID-19 restrictions, the College of Nursing at Brigham Young University could not sponsor in person events during the 2020–2021 academic year. To fill this void and offer undergraduate nursing students helpful information, we created The College Handoff, a weekly podcast series devoted to sharing career information and nursing insight. The podcast has continued and is in season three, with more than eighty episodes that feature 90-plus nursing alumni. BYU student employees produce each show and the programs contain interviews on unique nursing jobs. When invited to participate, many alumni believe they do not have much to contribute, but when they start sharing heartfelt memories of being on campus or how they struggled and overcame in their career—that’s the message we enjoy sharing in each segment.” –Jeff L. Peery, PR and Communications Manager, Brigham Young University, Utah, U.S.

“I started a podcast at our university called Why We Write. It's not limited to alumni, though the lion's share of guests are alumni and faculty. It’s taken some work to get it up and running, but it’s been a fun project and a way to highlight the accomplishments of authors in our community and promote our Master of Fine Arts degree in creative writing program in a non-pushy way.” –Georgia Sparling, Assistant Director of External Relations, Lesley University, Massachusetts, U.S.
