This workshop offers a comprehensive introduction to the field of educational fundraising and development, highlighting its strategic importance and its role in advancing the mission of institutions through meaningful, long-term impact. While designed with new and aspiring fundraising professionals in mind, the programme is equally relevant for colleagues across the wider advancement ecosystem—including alumni relations, marketing and communications, and advancement services—who seek to better understand how fundraising connects with and strengthens their own work.

Participants will be introduced to the full donor engagement cycle—prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship, and major giving—and gain practical tools to apply in their day-to-day roles. The workshop will also examine emerging trends and challenges in global and regional philanthropy, with a particular emphasis on the cultural and contextual dynamics of fundraising in Asia, especially in Hong Kong and China.

Through interactive discussions, case studies, and applied learning, this programme aims to foster professional confidence and a deeper appreciation for fundraising as a strategic and purposeful profession.

Learning Outcomes

  • Articulate and appreciate the strategic role of educational fundraising in supporting institutional goals and long-term sustainability.
  • Describe the key stages of the donor engagement cycle, including prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Apply core fundraising techniques and tools to real-world scenarios, including making the ask, stewarding donors, and planning for major gifts.
  • Understand current trends and emerging practices in educational philanthropy, both globally and within the Asian context.
  • Strengthen their professional confidence and sense of purpose, gaining clarity on how their work contributes to broader institutional and societal impact.
