Ale Mary
From the Nominator
In 2025, the Society of 1918 at William & Mary partnered with Virginia Beer Co., an alumni-owned Williamsburg brewery, to produce Ale Mary, a custom brewed beer for W&M Women’s Weekend. The Society of 1918 is a women’s giving community whose members have contributed nearly $775 million to the university in donations. Society members were involved throughout development. The name Ale Mary was selected through a vote sent to approximately 600 members, generating 121 responses and enabling participation from those unable to attend the Women's Weekend. Members contributed tasting feedback and experienced the final product during the Society of 1918 Gala and throughout Women’s Weekend programming. The custom-designed label featured an illustrated portrait of Queen Mary II, for whom the university is named. Supporting imagery included the Wren Building, Kensington Palace, and peach trees, with a color palette aligned with Society of 1918 brand standards. The hazy IPA was brewed with the Pink Boots Society Hop Blend. A total of 360 cans and five 15.5-gallon kegs were produced, selling out within three weeks. Social media promotion generated more than 24,000 views across platforms. Based on sustained demand, the university’s licensing team is exploring an ongoing Ale Mary partnership with Virginia Beer Co.
