In honor of the 40th anniversary of the University of Virginia's flagship study-abroad program, UVA in Valencia, we hosted nearly 200 alumni, parents, friends, faculty, students, and staff in Valencia, Spain, for a three-day celebration. We invited academic leaders, program faculty, former UVA in Valencia alumni, international alumni, and donors who have supported global initiatives to join us for the celebration. The program began with an opening cocktail reception at the iconic OnlyYou Hotel, renowned for its interior design and stunning views. The following day, guests gathered for breakfast with academic leaders, enjoyed a traditional paella lunch in El Palmar, and participated in tours of the charming Old Town and modern City of Arts and Sciences. On the final day of the celebration, guests rented bikes for a “Bike with Fernando,” led by our faculty director, through the Turia Riverbed Gardens. Participants then enjoyed a stunning closing gala hosted at The Hemisferic. This event was an opportunity to honor the individuals who have enabled this program to impact more than 10,000 students over the last 40 years. Additionally, we educated guests about UVA’s strategic goal to create an affordable international experience for every UVA student and the related philanthropic opportunities. This event was a unique donor cultivation experience that engaged many previously uncultivated alumni in a deeply meaningful way.

The University of Virginia successfully tied together fundraising efforts with an international event. They provided a comprehensive strategy to target different audiences through different departments. It is not an easy feat to achieve such integration.
