Good to Great: Strengthening the Relationship Between the Head of School and the Director of Development
While not every Head is born a great fundraiser (much less ever aspiring to be one), each possesses an abundance of talents and skills that can be leveraged into increasingly effective fundraising strategies. More than any other person in the School, the CAO wields unique and significant influence in both moving your Head from good fundraiser to great fundraiser, and, of equal importance, positively supporting the most critical relationship in the School—namely, the relationship between the Head and the Board Chair. More than any other member of the senior level team, the CAO partnership will have a greater and more lasting impact on the health and sustainability of the school in areas that extend well beyond fundraising. In this session, we will look deeply into the powerful partnership between the Head and CAO and learn how within the partnership the CAO can effectively manage-up and set the Head up for success in fundraising, board relations, and strategic planning. We will also explore things to consider when managing a CAO and your advancement operation. Gain insights and identify critical ways for building this relationship and learn ways to optimize, empower, encourage, and support each other to advance your institution.
David Smith, Director of Advancement, Saint Ann’s School
Kevin Yaley, Head, Francis Parker School

Metrics of a Strong Advancement Team
How to have intelligent and informed 1:1 meetings with your Advancement Director (AD), understand what key performance indicators a Head should keep his or her eye on, and what your board will expect to see from meeting to meeting. This session is designed to take new Heads from a general sense of what goes on in the advancement office to a deeper knowledge of the season to season and month-to-month KPIs that indicate the strength of your advancement team and position.
Teresa Weber, Former Director of Advancement, Hackley School
