AI in CFR: Navigating Innovation, Use Cases, and Impact
As AI becomes more powerful and pervasive, CFR professionals must navigate its evolving role in grant writing, research, reporting, and relationship management. This session will cover AI basics in CFR daily tasks including drafting letters of support, summarizing information, and editing grants, as well as using AI prompts and the newly developed AutoGranter that summarizes PIVOT information. We will also explore recent advances — including multimodal AI, autonomous agents, and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) while discussing the potential impact of AI on the CFR field.

Collaborative Approaches to Complex Funding: Navigating Gift & Grant Challenges
There is a growing need to address the changing expectations of funders as the dialogue surrounding gift versus grant and award acceptance becomes increasingly complex— which in turn fosters greater creativity in funder’s approaches. Corporate and Foundation Relations staff are now tasked with engaging donors in deeper conversations that transcend traditional impact discussions, delving into critical areas such as tax regulations, Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs), and alternative funding mechanisms. I aim to develop a session that not only showcases real-world examples of navigating complex gift and grant scenarios but also emphasizes the vital role of internal networks—collaborating with teams like Attorney General Offices, Gift Services, and Grants and Contracts Accounting—to successfully negotiate these multifaceted discussions.

Susan Ferrari (Grinnell College), Amy Myerson (Trinity College), and Kari Steeves (Barnard College) will lead a discussion on the multifaceted nature of positions in corporate, foundation, and government relations, and how work seemingly far afield from getting proposals out the door can contribute to success in grant-seeking and add value to our institutions.
Particularly at small offices or small institutions, CFR officers may have to dabble in a far-ranging set of fields to accomplish their goals. On any given day, we may moonlight as project managers, forensic accountants, faculty developers, or even family therapists–this in addition to writing, reviewing, and hitting submit. While it can be overwhelming to wear this many hats, our complex roles also mean that we have incredibly deep knowledge of the workings of our institutions, which enhances our ability to steward grants, support faculty, and contribute to strategic initiatives. During this session, the leaders will present a set of case studies highlighting the challenges and benefits of their “CFR-plus” roles–including how to enforce boundaries when your role is wide-ranging–and will invite the audience to share their own stories and insights.
