Emotional Intelligence: Why It is Key to Your Leadership Journey

What does Emotional Intelligence mean, and how do we apply it in our advancement careers? This session will provide an overview of Emotional Intelligence, looking at its roots in brain and behavioral research. We will hear how the concepts have manifested in practice across advancement disciplines and played a role in the leadership experiences of Academy faculty. Finally, you will have an opportunity to flex your emotional intelligence muscles in small work groups, with the understanding that these aren’t necessarily capacities that you are born with – but skills you can learn and hone.

Leadership in Advancement: The Solo Event in a Team Sport

Great leaders leverage more than just the power of their position to get things done. This session will provide an overview of the building blocks of leadership: self-awareness, defining a vision and the strategy that will achieve it, and leveraging well-constructed teams that have a multiplier effect. A panel of experienced leaders will then share examples of their leadership moments that bring these principles to life.

Cultural Intelligence: What It Is, How It's Used and Why It Will Make You a Better Leader

Navigating your way through different cultures is complex and challenging but the best leaders have made it their business to understand and be comfortable in their own culture and to utilize cultural literacy to understand others.  The principal focus for these sessions will be how to develop cultural literacy with an emphasis on cultural intelligence and understanding bias through the lens of philanthropy. Beginning with curiosity and humility, you’ll learn how to an active, attentive and authentic listener.

Building Strategic Relationships

John Donne famously wrote, “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main.” This is never more true than for the Advancement professional where collaboration and teamwork are hallmarks of a successful leader. In these sessions, we’ll explore how to proactively develop and sustain strategic partnerships as well as the importance of consensus building to define complicated challenges and achieve leading solutions. Participants will learn how effectively utilizing interpersonal skills and developing an interdependent approach are essential to mastering this competency.

Business Acumen: Your Secret Sauce for Successful Advancement Leadership  

The institutions we work for are increasingly sophisticated and complex financial organizations. Advancement programs operating within this context require leaders with strong business and financial acumen. This session will discuss the skills you need and why you need them. We’ll also talk about how to go about enhancing your abilities in this critical area and hear from senior leaders discuss how they developed their own abilities in this area, as well as how they develop potential leaders within their own organizations. The session will conclude with small group meetings where you can work with colleagues to develop your own plan for enhancing your business acumen.

Advancement leaders represent the reputation of their institutions and are called upon to set a tone and model behavior that centers an authentic and comprehensive commitment to people – students, donors, employees, communities – as foundational to our definition of leadership. In these sessions, extraordinary industry, higher education and non-profit leaders will explore the ‘moral compass’ of integrity and professionalism, including empathy, personal accountability, ethical conduct and building and sustaining inclusive and equitable communities.
