From the Nominator

The primary audience for this photograph was the Pomona College community, prospective student-athletes, and alumni. Our goal was to elevate the biannual student-athlete profile series by moving away from conventional headshots toward high-concept environmental portraiture. By showcasing Yafae Cotton--a philosophy, politics, economics (PPE) major and Posse Scholar--we aimed to bridge the gap between Pomona’s rigorous academic identity and its competitive athletic spirit. To capture Yafae’s dual identity as a philosopher and a running back, I moved the shoot to the field and experimented with a literal "student-athlete perspective" by shooting through the bars of a football helmet. This created a dramatic frame within a frame, using a shallow depth of field to keep Yafae as the sharp focus, while blurring the helmet's interior. Critically, I composed the shot to include the iconic Pomona clocktower in the background, subtly reinforcing that his athletic journey is centered within the college’s academic setting. The photo served as the lead image for the online feature, successfully driving higher-than-average click-through rates. It provided a fresh, modern visual language for Sagehen Athletics, which had just gone through a rebrand and featured new uniforms. The image resonated deeply with the community, serving as a model for how a single prop and creative composition can transform a standard profile.

This photo stands out for its fresh, unexpected perspective. Placing the portrait inside the helmet creates a clever, memorable twist on a student-athlete image. The concept feels simple at first glance, but the execution is precise and impactful, maximizing the visual payoff. It’s a smart, creative idea delivered with impressive clarity and intention.
