Photo With Slinky Prop
From the Nominator
This photo arose out of an event featuring more than 500 participants. The goal was to elevate the value of undergraduate research by moving beyond standard event coverage. Rather than relying solely on candid shots from the event floor, we invited featured researchers, like Savannah Tormala, into the University Communications photo studio before the event. For Tormala, we used an oversized Slinky to create patterns to represent sound vibrations. These portraits anchored a storytelling package that included long-form profiles, along with traditional event coverage. By treating student researchers like varsity athletes or high-profile alumni, we signaled that research is a premier pillar of the Grand Valley State University experience. The reflection portrait of Tormala became one of the visual hooks for a story, helping to drive engagement across university platforms.
