From the Nominator

Stanford photographer Andrew Brodhead created an intimate portrait series of poison dart frogs from Associate Professor Lauren O'Connell's Organismal Biology Lab. Here, researchers study how amphibians evolve in response to changing environments. To capture these tiny subjects with scientific precision and artistic impact, Andrew engineered a custom mini-studio, using curved polycarbonate plastic to create a seamless cyclorama wall backdrop. He collaborated closely with lab assistants throughout the shoot to ensure the amphibians remained comfortable and unstressed. This meticulous approach allowed him to photograph each frog as both a scientific specimen and individual personality—highlighting their vivid colors, intricate patterns, and unique characteristics. The series launched across Stanford Report's website and Instagram, generating significant engagement and making complex neuroscience research approachable.
