Kermencement - Kermit the Frog
From the Nominator
The University of Maryland’s 2025 commencement almost didn’t happen: Several days of storms initially caused the ceremony to be rescheduled and almost cancelled. Fortunately, the clouds parted just in time for families to pile into SECU Stadium on May 22, because what followed was a joyous night of celebration for the Class of 2025. And it was highlighted by a tiny guest of honor who would have been a little tough to see at the podium, if not for the fact that he's bright green. In his commencement address, Kermit the Frog spoke of positivity, the power of believing, and strength in community. His message of hope and optimism made national and international news, with our pictures appearing in the likes of ABC News, Good Morning America, the BBC, People Magazine, and USA Today. Our coverage continues to pop back up, with Kermencement being highlighted in Google’s 2025 Year in Search, and this photograph was chosen as one of CNN's Year in Pictures 2025. Kermencement was also covered in UMD's alumni magazine and daily newsletter, as well as the university’s social media, where Kermencement is still UMD's most-liked Instagram post.
From the Judges
This photo is award‑worthy because it captures a challenging moment with impressive coordination and a clever, intentional angle. By shooting from behind with a wide view of the graduates and a clear silhouette of the speaker, it creates instant recognition without revealing a face—an especially smart solution given the need to hide Kermit’s lower half. The result is a unique, memorable perspective that elevates a traditional ceremony shot into something special.
