“Hockey Night in East Lansing” is a time-layered composite image that captures the energy and atmosphere of a Michigan State University hockey game in a single frame. Inspired by the work of photographer Pelle Cass, a photographer from MSU’s Communications and Marketing team captured more than 2,000 photos from a fixed vantage point in the rafters of Munn Arena and seamlessly combined them into a single composition. The final image fills the entire rink with players from multiple moments throughout the game. A packed crowd, glowing scoreboard, and layered action work together to convey, in just one frame, scale, intensity and the passage of time. Created for social media storytelling, the image reached more than 483,000 users across Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and X, generating more than 25,000 engagements and strong audience interaction.
