Free AI Program
From the Nominator
WatSPEED at the University of Waterloo designed a free one-hour-long online AI learning event: Introduction to Machine Learning. The session combined expert instruction with practical demonstration. Participants explored how machine learning models learn from data, the differences between supervised and unsupervised learning, and how these approaches power modern data-science tools. A live Python demonstration illustrated how scientists use machine learning to uncover patterns and generate insights from complex datasets. The session ended with a 20-minute Q&A. The event generated 424 registrations and 123 live attendees, reflecting strong demand for accessible AI education. The workshop delivered significant impact. Following the session, 27 participants enrolled in WatSPEED’s Data Science program. Promotional communications reached 20,356 recipients and achieved a 58.48% open rate and 8.35% click-through rate. By combining accessible AI education with a pathway into training, the event successfully transformed interest in machine learning into participation in university continuing education.
From the Judges
Given the rise in AI and AI education, the institution found a point of interest for individuals before they enrolled. Great use of budget and a creative way to increase enrollment in continuing ed. Wasn't super impressed by the event show rate (29%) but was impressed by the attendee to enrollment rate of 21%. Judges definitely think this is something that can be replicated at other schools that are looking for ways to boost enrollment in certificate programs or other continuing ed programs, or honestly, undergrad enrollment. Would have loved to see more of the marketing materials that led to such a large number of registrations. This is a very strong data-driven, highly replicable program; it just lacks the creativity, uniqueness, and emotional engagement that would push it into top-tier territory.
