Field Sketching and Watercolor Class
From the Nominator
We sent a writer and a photographer to cover a week-long class in which students travel to Georgia's Jekyll Island to learn and practice sketching and watercolor painting. The goal was to create a set of images that illustrate the experiential learning that the university offers. The images were used on the University of Georgia's storytelling website and in our alumni publication, Georgia Magazine. The online story received 1,419 sessions on the landing page, with a 99% engagement rate, and there were a total of 3,319 pageviews. The images were also used in a social post on Instagram, where they received 3,337 likes, 26 comments, and 141 shares.
From the Judges
What stood out most in this lovely series was the use of light at the “golden hour.” It captured the whole event beautifully. The consistency in color and style makes it immediately clear that the photographs belong to the same body of work, and the subject of the series is also very clear: the people. Rather than relying on traditional action-heavy rodeo imagery, the photographer offers a more intimate, behind-the-scenes perspective.
