Earth’s Rocky Materials: Bringing Geology to Life at BU
From the Nominator
This video captures the magic of Professor Lawford Anderson’s “Earth’s Rocky Materials” class at Boston University, a course taught for nearly 50 semesters. Students don’t just read about rocks—they collect them on field trips across Boston, explore natural stone in BU’s own campus buildings, and analyze their finds in labs and class projects. The production followed this rich, hands-on experience, weaving together fieldwork, lab sessions, and candid interviews with three students and Professor Anderson himself. Filmed over almost an entire semester by a single producer and editor, Devin Hahn, the video uses a naturalistic, fly-on-the-wall style that lets viewers feel like they’re in the room—or outside with the students hunting rocks. The story highlights how immersive, experiential learning transforms students: One student gained confidence in her ability to do science and shifted from a journalism degree to environmental science. Released across BU’s digital channels, the video has attracted nearly 50,000 views—far exceeding typical engagement—and has been used for departmental fundraising and outreach. By showcasing the energy, curiosity, and personalities that make this class unique, the video celebrates decades of teaching excellence while bringing the excitement of higher education to life.
