CSSLab Media Bias Detector
From the Nominator
The University of Pennsylvania created the CSSLab Media Bias Detector video to support fundraising and raise awareness for the Computational Social Science Lab (CSSLab) and its Media Bias Detector, an innovative tool that analyzes patterns of media bias. The primary audience includes prospective donors, current supporters, and members of the public interested in socially relevant, data-driven research. The goal was to translate complex social science into an accessible narrative that supports long-term funding and stewardship for the lab. The film uses long-form video storytelling and the latest AI production tools to explain the purpose and significance of the Media Bias Detector, one project of the CSSLab. Rather than emphasizing technical details, the video focuses on why the research matters and highlights its relevance to public discourse and media literacy. This approach was designed to engage non-expert audiences. Produced and directed by Senior Video Producer Matt Cianfrani, the video was developed in collaboration with university leadership and school marketing departments for stewardship conversations and institutional presentations. To date, it has been shared with prospective donors and key stakeholders, including the lab's leaders and primary donor.
