Broome Magazine
From the Nominator
BROOME, SUNY Broome’s alumni magazine, shares college news, promotes the institution, and celebrates the achievements of our graduates. The magazine’s mission is simple: to show that a SUNY Broome degree leads to a career. The Spring 2025 issue featured “Supporting the Steps of Recovery,” highlighting alumni from the college’s Chemical Dependency Counseling program who are now working to support individuals struggling with substance use disorder. The team gave each alumnus equal prominence and unified the profiles through consistent color and typography. To avoid imagery that could feel stigmatizing, the design incorporated watercolor-stylized brain scans. The feature resonated strongly with readers—three of the four profiles were the most-viewed articles in the issue. The Fall 2025 issue included two major features. The cover story, “Then & Now: Trailblazers Meet the Next Generation,” paired three pioneering alumni who broke barriers in STEM and nursing fields from the 1950s–1970s with current students and recent graduates pursuing similar careers. A scrapbook-style layout incorporated vintage photos, maps, and personal details reflecting each subject’s story. A second feature, “10 Mock Disasters at SUNY Broome,” explored the college’s long-running mock disaster training exercise and included profiles of Health Studies Chairperson Erin O’Hara-Leslie and keynote speaker Kevin Morrissey (BUMA ’88). Beyond storytelling, BROOME aims to expand digital readership, while encouraging alumni to submit class notes, attend events, and support the college.
