Why California Falcons are Choosing City Life
From the Nominator
This video is about Annie, a falcon living in University of California, Berkeley’s Campanile that has become a bit of an internet sensation. Through her story, we highlight the university’s pivotal role in saving peregrine falcons from extinction and why these birds have started appearing in big cities. This video is part of the University of California’s Fig. 1 series, which explains science and research in an easy-to-digest way. To tell the story, we used narration, interviews, historical clips, and captivating falcon camera footage to convey the personality of these birds and the collective scientific effort that has gone into saving this species. We timed the release of the video to coincide with “Hatch Day”, an annual event where people on campus can watch a livestream of the hatching falcon eggs on a billboard-sized outdoor screen. The video was well-received on YouTube, our social channels, and throughout the UC community. It was also shared on local news sites and newsletters.
