Volunteers in Partnership (VIP) Leadership Conference
From the Nominator
In June 2024, the University of Rochester’s Office of Alumni Relations and Constituent Engagement (ARCE) hosted its fourth biennial Volunteers in Partnership (VIP) Leadership Conference. The conference strives to cultivate a culture of ownership and advocacy among the university's 5,000+ volunteers; provides educational opportunities within four key knowledge areas (one university, today’s students, engagement, philanthropy); builds leadership competencies; prepares volunteer leaders for success as ambassadors; and stewards and thanks volunteer leaders for giving of their time and talent. Over two days, attendees engaged in six signature programs including the following: a keynote address about leading with purpose; a strategic planning conversation with the university provost and deans; a stewardship dinner with the university president; a fireside chat exploring dialogue through conflict and free speech; a presentation by Priya Parker, "Gathering to Create Belonging"; and a student life panel. In addition, breakout sessions were hosted by alumni on mentorship, inclusive leadership, and charitable giving. University staff hosted programs such as "Harnessing the Power of Storytelling." The weekend featured esteemed faculty and exclusive behind-the-scenes tours hosted by university leadership. The conference brought back over 250 attendees from 25 states to experience campus today, connect with one another, and learn about topics affecting the university and each other. Compared to its inaugural conference in 2016, the 2024 VIP Leadership Conference saw a 123% increase in attendance and an increase from seven programs to more than 40.
