UCSF Magazine's “The Wonderful World of 3D+”
From the Nominator
This series of still-life photographs, featured in the Winter 2024 issue of UCSF Magazine, captures the awe-inspiring potential of 3D printing in medicine. The accompanying story delves into how University of California, San Francisco surgeons are using 3D-printed models to gain unprecedented insight into a patient’s anatomy, from tiny hearts to fractured bones, enabling more accurate decision-making and complex surgeries. Photographer Elena Zhukova and prop stylist Masha Kechaeva collaborated to bring these remarkable models to life through an artistic lens. The photographs showcase intricate 3D-printed objects, such as heart models, capillary systems, and skulls, carefully arranged into otherworldly sculptures. Captured in the UCSF Center for Advanced 3D+ Technologies’ lab, the process involved meticulously constructing these striking forms into sculptures and hanging still-lifes, highlighting the intersection of cutting-edge technology and creative artistry. The resulting images illustrate the profound impact of 3D printing on medical practice and evoke a sense of wonder and precision, allowing the viewer to marvel at the blend of science, art, and innovation.
