UBC Magazine
From the Nominator
UBC Magazine is a bridge between the university and its alumni. It aims to provide readers with strong incentives for staying involved with and invested in their university. Its execution is driven by research that revealed alumni want an ongoing emotional connection with The University of British Columbia; a sense of community with fellow alumni; and a desire to see UBC as a changemaker. The magazine meets this latter expectation by publishing content demonstrating the university’s real-world expertise on matters of social importance. Half of each issue carries themed content, exploring subject areas alumni have indicated are most important to them: health and well-being, the environment, and technology. The spring 2024 theme explored how artificial intelligence can be applied for social good, and the fall issue looked at where we are in the transition from fossil fuels to cleaner forms of energy. The back half of the magazine carries our departments, which are designed to strengthen emotional connections to UBC and the sense of belonging. These include nostalgia pieces; campus news, quizzes, and imagery; and alumni profiles. In short, we showcase an influential UBC community that is driving the future, encourage pride in belonging to it, and inspire fond memories of a shared university experience. The magazine’s performance in terms of readership is measured by annual surveys conducted by the alumni association, as well as by online stats (the print content is also offered online and pushed out via social media).
