Terp Magazine--Winter and Spring 2024 Issues
From the Nominator
Terp magazine connects the University of Maryland (UMD) community, celebrating its people and their impact through compelling and ambitious storytelling, arresting photography, thoughtful illustrations, and sophisticated, clean design. The magazine informs and entertains, covering timely topics, such as climate change, the perils and promise of generative AI, and national political strife through a UMD lens. In addition, the publication serves up fascinating profiles and fun takes on Terp life. These two issues showcase that balance. One outstanding example is a fun cover that features a VW Bug with an I LOVE TERPS license plate, which sets up the feature article on the stories behind University of Maryland vanity license plates. Another issue was printed with three different covers of historic illustrations of UMD’s mascot, Testudo; inside were whimsical illustrations and photos of Testudo over the years in a feature, "Standing the TESTUDO of Time." Also in this issue were stunning photographs in a feature about low-cost homes in Albuquerque that an alum architect is building for Indigenous communities. The magazine is mailed three times a year to 108,000 alums, friends, and other stakeholders, and its content extends much further via a companion website, the university's daily news site, and UMD’s social media channels. A 2024 Alumni Association survey found (again) that Terp magazine is the number-one way alums stay connected to UMD.
From the Judges
Terp is a standout. From its varied layouts to its commitment to printing multiple covers, this magazine's little touches make its content outstanding. We deemed it “a lot of fun to read, even if you're not an alumnus!”
