Redefining Donor Recognition with Art and Hawaiian Storytelling
From the Nominator
In fall 2024, Punahou School unveiled a captivating collection of mosaic art that now adorns the Leadership Donor Wall of its Sidney and Minnie Kosasa Community for Grades 2–5 (the Kosasa Community). Set within the oculus spiral stairwell of the Kosasa Community, the mosaics were a collaborative project between the second through fifth grade students of the Kosasa Community, the ‘Ike Hawai‘i kumu (Hawaiian knowledge teachers), the alumna ceramics artist, and the major donors whose support made the Kosasa Community a reality. The Kumu shared legends of Mānoa Valley (where Punahou is located) and Hawai‘i with students and introduced them to varieties of native flora and fauna during nature walks around campus, through storytelling, and with books. The students were then encouraged to create drawings based on what they had learned. The project resulted in hundreds of images of trees, birds, water features, and other images. These drawings became the inspiration for the artist, who saw the beauty in the children’s creations and, in turn, transformed them into the stunning mosaics that adorn the Kosasa Community Leadership Donor Wall. Alongside the colorful mosaics hang panels displaying the names of the donors who made the Kosasa Community possible. The Leadership and Donor Wall is a testament to the power of philanthropy and inspiration, and the endless possibilities that emerge when creativity is allowed to flow freely across generations.
