Racing to Romance
From the Nominator
The Yale Alumni Magazine goes to more than 135,000 alumni of Yale College and the graduate and professional schools. The "Old Yale" column, which in each issue highlights a person, place, event, or phenomenon from Yale's past, has been a reader favorite for more than 35 years. The column is one of the ways the magazine fulfills the part of its mission statement that charges us with "evok[ing] Yale as it was in the past." This column, about an annual bicycle relay race to Vassar College in the 1950s, jogged the memories of older readers and shed light on the social and sexual mores of the era for younger readers.
