LSA Magazine
From the Nominator
In our spring issue of LSA Magazine, we examined artificial intelligence and the concept of reality writ large through the lens of the liberal arts. In our fall issue, we took on a topic even more vast: hope. The spring issue acknowledged that we face questions every day about whether something is real. The liberal arts are well suited to help us make sense of it all: the technology, the impact, the ways that people interact with the world around them, and all of the knowns and unknowns that live in the ones and zeros as well as in hearts and minds. In the fall, we knew that our magazine would arrive in mailboxes a week or so after the November elections. Narratives about chaos and division would be taking top billing, but we knew that glimmers of hope are all around us. We highlighted some of the ways our alumni, faculty, students, and staff are creating positive change in the lives of people, animals, and the planet. They remind us that hope can come in many forms—even a bowl of yak butter. The audience for the magazine is about 200,000 alumni of our college. The strategic goal is to communicate with our alumni in a way that makes them feel engaged with their alma mater.
From the Judges
What stood out to us most was the magazine’s striking visual presentation, with gorgeous covers, engaging illustrations, and creative photography. The “hope” theme felt timely and thoughtful, and features like “24 Reasons” were especially well done. The overall design and storytelling made this a memorable and impactful issue.
