The Lawrentian
From the Nominator
The Lawrentian is an 80-page magazine published three times a year by The Lawrenceville School, an independent grades 9-12 boarding and day school in New Jersey. We have long focused on telling interesting stories that are unique to Lawrenceville, with candid feature profiles and issues-based features that are forthright. Our news section has largely moved away from announcement-type material and now presents deeper looks at the classroom, with fun sidebars on topics like the year's most popular elective course, or what happens in the school's lost and found. Our "Table Talk" section (a play on the oval Harkness tables that are in most classrooms) spotlights some aspect of academic life, like a teacher or a student project. One of our favorite sections is "Take This Job and Love It," which highlights alumni working in unusual, quirky occupations, or fields that makes the readers ask, "Yeah, what is that all about?" We've done pieces on a tugboat captain, a voiceover artist, and an exotic adventure guide, the last of which is included in this entry. "Go Big Red" is a deeper look at Lawrenceville athletics, with space devoted to alumni making news in sports; "Encore" is devoted to performing and visual arts. "Ask the Archivist" is perhaps our most beloved editorial section. One member of the school's archives staff will do a deep dive on a particular aspect of Lawrenceville's 215-year history. The subject is often tied to some current event on campus or in the nation or world.
