Intention Made Visible: Keeping Donors Connected to Their Estate Intentions
From the Nominator
How do you say thank you for something that hasn’t happened yet? Reed College set out to do just that by creating a new stewardship program for members of its Eliot Society, which honors those who have included the college in their estate plans. A need for a stronger connection between donors at all levels and the future impact of their gifts led to the creation of the legacy giving impact report. The report was sent to all 848 living Eliot Society members, keeping them connected to their gift intention and the college they hold dear. The report illustrates impact and demonstrates gratitude by including the voices of leadership-level program staff who put estate gifts to use, past donors whose gifts are already making a difference, and current students expressing how estate gifts support their education. The piece is brought to life by beautiful illustrations of memorable campus scenes from a current student. The closing pages of the report highlight a unique stewardship event—an art installation honoring members of the Eliot Society. Students, staff, and alumni in the Scriptorium calligraphy workshop hand-lettered names of Eliot Society members on strips of craft paper which were tied along a pedestrian bridge on campus. The visual impact of hundreds of names served to thank donors and raise awareness of giving among students and alumni during reunions. Eliot Society members were invited to help install the names and they were sent an article written by an alumna covering the event.
From the Judges
This entry was one of the best legacy and estate gift stewardship models we have ever seen. It is simple, beautiful, powerful, and innovative. A very fresh, resource-friendly, and institutionally-inspired approach.
