How UCL is Tackling the Global Challenge of Dementia
From the Nominator
Dementia is one of the toughest scientific and socio-economic challenges facing our society today. It affects more than 55 million people worldwide. A new case is diagnosed every three seconds. Our campaign aimed to highlight how University College London (UCL) is tackling the global challenge of dementia. We focusing on the university's expertise in three key areas: cure, prevention and care. We showcased the impact of our research in transforming lives, including patient experiences and ethnic inequalities in diagnosis and care. We highlighted how UCL researchers are leading the fight against Alzheimer’s disease through breakthrough drug treatments. We also brought attention to often-overlooked rare forms of dementia and the structural challenges in treating people with dementia. Our goal was to engage our community, partners, and external audiences in telling the story of how UCL has been at the forefront of neuroscience research for more than three decades. To amplify this, we leveraged the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Month (September) to feature our content based on five key themes: 1) Multidisciplinary thinking and collaboration to drive progress; 2)Translating research discoveries into breakthrough treatments; 3) Preventing dementia; 4) Revolutionizing care for those with dementia; and 5) Training the next generation of dementia researchers. Our month-long, cross-institutional campaign, executed by a small communications team with no monetary spend, has served as an example for subsequent UCL campaigns.
