Hopkins Bloomberg Public Health Magazine: Planetary Health Special Issue
From the Nominator
In this special issue devoted to Planetary Health, our writers explore the Earth crisis, how humans have contributed to it, and the public health approaches that can help solve it. This issue examines many of the ways humans have transformed Earth’s natural systems to the detriment of health: the rising infectious disease risks associated with disrupted ecosystems, nutrition deficits caused by increased CO2 levels, health and environmental costs of industrial food animal production, and the physical and mental health tolls of higher temperatures. It also highlights research aimed at repairing the harm: supporting climate-smart transportation, preserving glacial ice, reducing food waste, and constructing sustainable cities are just a few approaches. The Earth crisis—the greatest threat to public health of all—demands an urgent, science-based response. This issue demonstrates that public health and planetary health have tools to meet the moment.
