Hopkins Bloomberg Public Health Magazine
From the Nominator
Hopkins Bloomberg Public Health Magazine takes on the big issues of public health—an aging society and the burgeoning field of planetary health. With personal narratives, data, and striking images, the magazine offers a journalistic approach that often (but not always) relies on Bloomberg School faculty as sources who explain issues and solutions that affect the health of individuals, communities, and humanity. Our twice yearly, 56-page issues target alumni, faculty, and people in the public who are interested in human health. The Spring/Summer 2024 issue captured the reality of a rapidly aging society, including a rare look at challenges faced by the nation’s 26 million unpaid caregivers of older adults; the essential restorative power of sleep; and the molecular-to-societal reach of the new science of aging. The issue also includes stories on a Nobel laureate’s third act, why healthy food programs should target adolescents, and a brief history of traffic deaths in the U.S. The Fall/Winter 2024 special issue focused on the Earth’s sustainability crisis and the solutions-based approach of the new field of planetary health. It explores how a band of South Baltimore residents and scientists are taking on big coal, why rising carbon levels are making our food less nutritious, and how people in four countries are surviving in a world out of balance.
