The GSU Blue Line: Transforming Campus Connectivity and Safety
From the Nominator
The GSU Blue Line is a 3.7-mile designated walking path through Georgia State University’s downtown Atlanta campus. It enhances navigation, safety, campus identity, and a sense of belonging. Inspired by urban trails like New York’s High Line and Atlanta’s Beltline, this initiative aims to position the Blue Line as a defining campus feature and aligns with GSU’s vision of creating a student-friendly urban campus. The project introduced QR-coded trail markers for wayfinding, historical insights, and emergency resources. Security measures include cameras, lighting, and increased campus security. A phased campaign approach—featuring a dedicated digital hub, high-profile media coverage, social media activations, public art installations and an official launch event—ensured sustained engagement and visibility. The results were remarkable: more than 250,000 social impressions, a 30% increase in applications for fall 2025, and a record-breaking $80 million gift from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation, the largest single donation in University System of Georgia history. The GSU Blue Line has become a national model for urban campus placemaking, reinforcing GSU’s role as a leader in innovation, safety, and student engagement in the heart of downtown Atlanta.
