Evermore
From the Nominator
Evermore’s goal is always to highlight Texas Tech's incredible people, who embody our values of grit and resilience in the face of overwhelming obstacles. To do that, we bring our readers inside each person’s experience through exceptional storytelling and creative, immersive design. The design of each main feature is carefully crafted to best convey the realities of that person’s life. In these issues, readers learn through Scout Sonnenberg what it's like to be visually impaired. An article with a nontraditional approach shares E.J. Holub’s story through Bernay Sheffield’s. David Gaschen’s article uses linework that can be interpreted as the Phantom’s floating candles or as New York City’s skyscrapers. Bill Adling’s own watercolor painting serves as a throughline of his story. The use of up-close, vulnerable portraits and Lawrence Schovanec’s own handwriting attest to our university president’s humility. Our Strive For Honor section transitions from long-form narratives to short, in-the-moment profiles of individuals still working to achieve their goals and prove the university’s tagline: From Here, It’s Possible. As a visual cue that these pieces are different, they employ portraits with dramatic, colorful lighting--it’s a hint that their stories have not yet reached their resolutions. Measurable results are sometimes difficult to come by for printed publications. For Evermore, a growth in subscriptions and, secondarily, social media followers indicate our success with our audience.
From the Judges
Evermore was clearly set apart, showcasing bold design, excellent use of images, and strong typography. The layouts, in issue 6 specifically, are incredibly inventive and immersive, while still being fantastically balanced. Though each section throughout both pieces is markedly different in color and style, the flow was seamless.
