From Curiosity to Competence: Empowering Employees with AI Education
From the Nominator
Generative artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming industries, including higher education. The global AI in education market, valued at $2.5 billion in 2022, is projected to reach $6 billion by 2025. While many higher education institutions have focused on implementing AI in the teaching and learning space, few have extended these innovations to advancement staff. Recognizing the potential of AI, New York University’s Office of University Development and Alumni Relations launched a strategic initiative in 2024 to integrate AI into our daily workflows. With a staff of 255 full-time employees spanning fundraising, alumni engagement, data, prospect research, advancement services, and operations, we sought to increase efficiency, enhance creativity, and position our team at the forefront of AI-driven innovation. Through a comprehensive education and adoption strategy, we demystified AI for staff at all levels. We conducted a pre-survey to assess knowledge gaps and concerns, followed by an October 2024 all-staff presentation that introduced AI’s capabilities and ethical considerations. High demand immediately led to six team and 11 individual hands-on trainings in Nov. and Dec. 2024 alone, where we set up AI tools on employees’ computers and phones, and explored practical applications for brainstorming, writing, data analysis, and organization. Our Senior Vice President personally committed to weekly AI learning and implementation, setting a precedent for leadership buy-in. The results were immediate: teams reported time savings, improved data organization, and increased creativity in donor engagement strategies. This initiative, executed with a lean budget, provides a scalable model for higher education institutions.
From the Judges
We were impressed by New York University’s comprehensive approach to generative AI training, the effective leadership in embracing a significant change, and the positive focus on staff empowerment. By demystifying the topic of generative AI, providing practical examples, and addressing employees’ reasons for hesitation, they removed barriers and showed what is possible. It is timely, forward-thinking, and a great model for others looking to leverage generative AI across all areas of advancement.
