BROOME Alumni Magazine Spring 2024 and Fall 2024
From the Nominator
BROOME alumni magazines capture college news, promote SUNY Broome Community College, celebrate our graduates’ successes, and share stories with the largest audience of any campus publication. Perhaps, if we distilled BROOME’s mission into a single sentence, it would be: "showcasing that a SUNY Broome degree leads to a career." Our spring 2024 edition spotlighted three alumni with remarkable stories of working with medical emergencies. The featured alumni and admirable healthcare professionals are called upon—in hospitals, helicopters, or middle school hallways—to combine their education, skills, and honed experience in triage to care for lives in our community. We connected these thematic profiles throughout the layouts through color, typography, and stylized curling medical gauze. The fall 2024 edition features the stories of four remarkable alumni who found wild and unique careers among giraffes, penguins, pocket pets, and reptiles in zoos, veterinarian offices, and labs. This feature visually combined the four profiles with small, fun, animal-related elements and a greens and khakis color palette to recall the natural world and let the vibrant photos shine. Another highlight is the tale of retired Captain Gregg Baumann (Engineering Science ’85). Baumann, who’d never even been on a boat before joining the Navy, plunged into a career of marine salvage that has recently brought his expertise to bear with the recent Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse. Besides featuring compelling and engaging articles, some of our goals for BROOME are to increase our online circulation and inspire our alumni to submit class notes, attend our events, and support the college.
From the Judges
A magazine with a strong identity and solid content that doesn’t need flashy treatment to be compelling and can stand on its own. The editorial team should be proud to find so much for their alumni to feast on and to add pages during a time when many are cutting.
