Bostonia: Boston University’s Alumni Magazine Winter–Spring 2024 and Fall 2024
From the Nominator
Through intelligent, substantive, and expertly written and edited articles, vivid photography, energetic design, and a variety of storytelling formats, Bostonia is committed to telling the stories that reflect the intellectual life and vibrancy of the entire Boston University community, in ways that often are relevant to current social, political, and scientific trends. The magazine strives to foster an emotional connection between alumni and the university; demonstrate BU’s enduring value to our graduates; and engage alumni around the world with stories that inspire, inform, entertain, and spark pride. The covers and pages of Bostonia in 2024 truly lift up and celebrate our alumni, our new president, a beloved faculty member, and BU’s groundbreaking research in both aging and traumatic brain injury. For our summer cover story, we sent a writer to the Connecticut home of legendary chef and longtime BU faculty member Jacques Pépin. (The hook: a new cookbook and a new generation of fans on social media.) The issue also featured a package on BU’s important research on aging, which included tips to a long life and vignettes about older alumni and their second acts. Our fall issue celebrated the historic inauguration of BU’s 11th president—with lots of joyful photos. We also featured our nationally known Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy Center, but instead of focusing solely on the research and its impact (which we’ve done), writer Molly Callahan took a different tack. She spoke to family members who have donated a loved one’s brain to be studied.
From the Judges
Bostonia’s energy and pizzaz offered a stunning array of stories energetically told. The layouts offered a lot, pages were not overwhelming or too dense, but they packed a lot in and made reading these pieces a real pleasure. Good use of resources and an ambitious, expansive piece.
