From the Nominator

Seeking to leverage matching funds raised through the University of Virginia’s (UVA's) $5 billion capital campaign, the Tomorrow’s Teachers Fund addresses the critical shortage of qualified teachers exacerbated by the COVID pandemic. The Tomorrow's Teacher Fund case statement supports fundraising for a $50 million endowment for tuition and fees assistance for teacher-education students at UVA’s School of Education and Human Development (SEHD). Building on the success of a one-sheeter produced in partnership with UVA Advancement Communications, the case statement was commissioned against the tight deadline of an upcoming SEHD board meeting. The design successfully melded the brand looks of the UVA capital campaign and the SEHD. In keeping with SEHD’s evidence-based approach, facts and statistics are effectively used to outline the need. Faculty and student profiles and photography compellingly present the challenge firsthand. A menu of giving opportunities and examples of their impact conclude the publication. Input from all stakeholders—the SEHD board, dean, faculty, and development officers—was solicited and incorporated throughout the production process to ensure stakeholder buy-in and a quick turnaround. Since publication in October 2023, we have raised half of our $1 million goal for expendable funds (with an outstanding proposal for another $500,000), and we are in discussions with prospective donors for over $15 million toward our goal of $50 million in endowment support.

From the Judges

We agreed that the UVA staff produced an outstanding case statement. The graphics effectively illustrate the teacher shortage and solution, while faculty and student profiles add a personal touch. This solid and competent piece combines engaging narrative, data, and testimonials to clearly show how donors can make a real difference. The problem/solution messaging is persuasive and easy to follow, making a compelling case for support. Great job illuminating a complex national issue and highlighting UVA's role in solving it!
