From the designer Joseph Brumleve: This illustration features Coleman Hawkins--the 6’10” Illinois men’s basketball power forward--and showcases his unique ability to run the floor and his enthusiasm after finishing the play. Coleman exhibits what it means to be an Illini: his team-first mindset; a desire to win above all else; and a relentless passion for the game he loves. This illustration appeared in the digital STORIED magazine, as well as in the print edition. Online, the illustration became a fast-paced animation that begins with loose sketching, gradually becoming more defined as it progresses. The animation culminates in a full portrait of Coleman striking his signature pose. The illustration was accomplished by illustrating frame by frame and using an array of brushes in Photoshop. The final composite was then prepared in high-resolution and featured in the print edition of STORIED.

The illustration is impactful and visually compelling, effectively conveying energy and emotion. Its cohesive composition, coloring, and layout with the text are spot on. Overall, it's a stunning and dynamic piece that skillfully elevates a message through texture, layering, and raw emotion.
