Each year, Merced College sends out a creative and fun holiday card to donors, other dignitaries and supporters in our community. This year, we purchased a 3D printer and designed our own Christmas tree ornament. The ornaments were printed in our office and attached to the cards, which included an option to make a donation and have an ornament sent to another person. Several recipients took advantage of this feature, including one of our deans, who purchased 10 ornaments to give to his staff. The ornament's design featured our new "MC" logo, which was part of the spirit branding that was developed in-house and rolled out earlier in the year. A mini-site was created to facilitate donations and shipping the ornaments.

Of all of the entries reviewed, judges found this fun and creative concept to be the most memorable. What a clever way to engage the community and create a new tradition! Judges appreciate that this project was quite unique and unexpected, but entirely replicable at other institutions. We were delighted by the simple yet elegant web page and mesmerized by watching the ornament being made on the 3D printer.
