From the Nominator

The University of Alberta and its alumni share more than a century of tremendous expertise and talent. Reflecting shared experience, our alumni magazine turned 100 in 2020. Our “Amazing Alumni Stories (Part I)” issue features a retro, comic-book-style approach with highlights from the past century—eliminating braggy, institutional rhetoric in favour of content that delights readers. (In fact, we had so much glorious content that we served it up over two issues, but that’s another story.) This package is intended to showcase how our academic rigour,  innovative thinking and scholarly research is rooted in a century’s worth of serving as a great public university.

From the Judges

We found this storytelling presentation to be creative and engaging. Even though there are several different stories and multiple illustrators, the theme brings cohesion across the entire piece. The different illustrators do a good job of representing various genres within the comic book world. There is great use of color. The numbering of each story draws you through the content. Each spread has a unique layout but remains a unified piece.
