    From the Nominator

The 2019 UC Davis Global Affairs’ International Student and Scholar Handbook is an engaging resource for new members of the UC Davis international community. Designed by student design majors and edited by student editors, it makes complex information and important resources approachable and visually appealing, modeled after a journal one might keep while traveling. The guidebook includes recommendations for places to shop and eat from students, faculty, and staff; information about housing and transportation; and reminders about regulations specific to international visitors—such as work authorization and travel forms. Content is organized longitudinally by need, beginning with housing and transportation, finishing with ways to become more involved on campus and in the community. Infographic elements help explain some of the more complex information, like banking or taxes. Student and staff recommendations are woven throughout to personalize the resource and, ultimately, provide a sense of community.

    From the Judges

Judges really liked the involvement of students, faculty, and staff in the creation of this publication. Great design, very organized and helpful information for international students. The communications team used informal focus groups to learn from international students what content would be useful. This guidebook is very comprehensive, but is designed with great photos and good use of white space to make it visually appealing. Using student and staff recommendations on places to shop, visit and eat provides a nice sense of community for the reader.
