This was a portrait taken of a Boston University student who recently made the decision to live off campus, and is part of a series called “Big Decisions.”

This photo was a favorite of every judge on the panel. Even though the photo was staged, it felt like the photographer captured a private moment. The red door is open, and the viewer is given access to this student’s world. The composition was brilliant. The photo was well lit with two competing light sources, one on the door and one coming from outside. The emotion is appropriate. “I remember feeling this way. Looking forward to a new opportunity but also wondering if you are ready for getting a utility bill and paying for repairs.” And in this old Boston building, something is bound to break.
