Problem-Solving Skills to Master
Amid today’s many disruptions, leaders have to approach complex problems with clarity. Here are some skills that can strengthen and refine problem-solving abilities.
- Problem framing. Framing a problem correctly by asking questions, such as clarifying whether you are looking at symptoms or root causes, can distinguish a calculated response from a strategic one.
- Empathy. Empathy can allow leaders to understand problems raised by those who face them firsthand, such as customers or team members. This can lead to solutions that are more relevant and likelier to be adopted.
- Breaking fixedness. Workplaces can sometimes use the same solutions to deal with new problems. Break through cognitive fixedness (the habit of defaulting to what’s familiar) by exploring how those in unrelated industries solve similar issues.
- Psychological safety. If team members believe that it is safe to take interpersonal risks, they can contribute ideas and challenge ways of thinking. Leaders can create this environment by normalizing learning from failure and rewarding feedback, even if it’s critical.
- Creativity. Creativity in problem-solving can mean seeing options where others may see an obstacle. It can also include asking unexpected questions and quickly coming up with alternative ideas.
