Lessons From Olympians
Most of us feel that the accomplishments of Olympians are out of our reach. While that may be true, there is still much we can learn from their mindsets, says Brad Stulberg, author of The Way of Excellence. Here are some Olympian lessons you can apply.
Enjoy the process. Don’t fall for the myth that when you reach your goal, your life will be complete and happy. There is always another goal to chase. What gives you satisfaction is the process of working towards a goal—for instance, the self-knowledge you gain, the determination you build, and the relationships you form along the way. In other words, you are fulfilled by becoming a better version of yourself.
Be ‘uncool.’ Remember the cool kid in school who looked like he didn’t care and never tried too hard? That kid probably had an underlying fear of failure. Olympians care deeply and risk big. They put aside safety and comfort to pursue their dreams. Are your fears holding you back from living a bigger life?
Gain confidence by doing the work. Confidence is not about saying the right thing to sell yourself. It’s about putting in the training and hard work that produces results. You are showing yourself and others that you do belong in the race.
Value consistency. Olympians don’t bet on having a lucky day at an event—they do the work day in and day out to meet their goals. Set a big goal, then break it down into smaller parts. Mostly forget about the goal and focus on accomplishing the parts—then the goal will take care of itself.
