CASE Advancement in Schools Survey

About the Survey

The CASE Advancement in Schools Survey will help practitioners trace the expansion and innovation of development and external relations initiatives in schools. Given that schools are of different sizes and in different locations across the world, the survey enables colleagues working in educational advancement at schools with:

  • Reliable statistics and key information that assists planning, decision making and forecasting,
  • Data to illustrate how successful fundraising operations are structured, operated, and delivered against target,
  • Comparative information about investment and return and the factors that impact on this, and
  • Best practice to demonstrate both successes and challenges in development and external relations programmes.

The survey is the outcome of a global consultation with volunteers from the schools' sector and aims to be applicable and relevant to school's across the globe whether it be public, private, independent or international schools. The questions have been inspired from the important work CASE has done over the past ten years in the UK Schools' Philanthropic Giving Survey and the Fundraising in International School's Survey. The result will be a rich and robust global dataset powered by an interactive and easy-to-use toolkit that will enable participating schools answer strategic questions, plan development programmes and share best practice.

When does the survey open?

The survey will launch on 5 February 2018. CASE staff and CASE volunteers from the school's sector will be available to answer any of your queries during this time. To register your interest to take part, please click here.

How do participants complete the survey?

The survey will be hosted on the CASE Benchmarking Toolkit. The toolkit will allow participating schools to complete the survey in a safe and secure manner. It will also facilitate reporting and benchmarking when the results are published. Please register your school's interest to take part in the survey by completing the linked form.

Participation in the survey is FREE for CASE members and for first-time participants. This includes access to the CASE benchmarking toolkit, the interactive dashboard, the overall sector report and infographic.

Benchmarking Groups

CASE volunteers across the globe are working with colleagues at key sector associations and groups to ensure all schools from particular membership associations or groups take part. CASE is also working with its regional offices to ensure there is representation from all relevant countries. This will enhance the benchmarking experience as schools similar to each other will be able to benchmark their advancement activities with schools who are in a comparable position and with those who make up the aspirational group.

Survey Committee

Kate Robertson, Chief Advancement Officer, St Peter's College [CHAIR]

Lynn Wells, Director of Advancement, International School of Kenya

David Shepherd, Director of College Advancement, UWC South East Asia

Aleks Duric, Director – Advancement, Saint Ignatius' College, Riverview

Heather Watson, Executive Director - Advancement and Community Relations, Brisbane Grammar School

Diana Colmenares, Development Director, Colegio Nueva Granada

Cynthia Davis Hall, Director of Advancement, Lincoln Community School

Emily Robin, Director of Advancement, American School of Paris

Christopher Enticknap, Foundation Director, Barnard Castle School

CASE runs the survey data sets through rigorous checks to ensure that the data submitted is free from errors and as robust as possible.

All committee members sign non-disclosure agreements with CASE Europe to safeguard the data submitted by participating institutions. As part of the data querying process, committee members may get access to un-anonymised survey data to enable them to conduct meaningful checks and use their experience and knowledge of the sector to flag any oddities in the data (for instance, if a very small institution reports a relatively large alumni staff number). Apart from these checks, CASE staff also run a number of logic, arithmetic and ratio checks.

By taking part in the survey you agree for your institution's data to be used by CASE in the above listed ways.

CASE Insights on Philanthropy (United Kingdom and Ireland) 2024-25 Key Findings

Institutions secured £1.55 billion in new funds committed, an increase on the previous year’s total of £1.52 billion. Over the past five years, total new funds committed have risen substantially, with median performance increasing even more sharply. However, there is a divergence between headline totals and typical institutional experience, with some institutions often not benefiting from the same levels of contribution.
