Campfire - Delete It All and Start Again? How to Make a Better Intranet (Aligned to High-Impact, Low-Cost Marketing Tactics That Actually Work)
Session overview: Intranets are funny things. Packed full of incredibly useful information but often left unguarded to grow into something unruly with duplicate or outdated content and navigation structures that are tricky at best. And let’s not mention the homepage of an intranet, which often seems to have a link to *everything* stuffed on there. But it doesn’t have to be like this! We deserve better Intranets, so why don’t we build them? In this session, Dave Musson will take you through his journey to redesign the Intranet for the Department of Mathematics at the University of Warwick, in the UK. When Dave inherited the department’s Intranet, it was somewhat chaotic; far too many pages, a navigation system and hierarchy that were no longer fit for purpose, and a user experience that was a frustrating drain of time and energy. Fast-forward 18 months, and everything is looking a lot healthier! Dave will share the steps he took to tackle this big project in the hope that you can take them away and help improve your own intranets. This includes scrutinising site analytics to understand how the Intranet was being used; conducting research and user-testing with stakeholders from across the department; using those insights to craft a new structure; building new content, tweaking existing content, and purging useless stuff; prioritising user experience; and building plans to ensure that staff feel ownership of the new Intranet and that it is better managed, so it doesn’t get out of hand again in the future. This overhaul was all done in-house, by one person, with no budget, and Dave will share insights on how to handle such a project and ensure you can do the same. He'll also share tips on launching a new intranet, dealing with feedback from colleagues, and engaging both academic and administrative staff to help embrace something we don’t always like in higher education…change!
