    Steps for Interested Participants

    The first step in the process is completing the survey contact form. We will use this information to provide you access to the survey. Once the contact form is completed, a member of the CASE research team will reach out to with the survey link and instructions for completing the survey. Please contact research@case.org if you have any issues.

    Once you have a your survey link and documents you can begin completing the survey.

    We have created two documents to assist with survey completion. The first is a Guidance Document that contains definitions, counting standards, examples, and question-by-question guidance. The second document is a Survey Validation worksheet for use in assembling and checking data prior to entering it in the online survey.  The excel sheet performs some automatic quality checks on your data. For example, it checks that "contactable alumni" is less than "total alumni".

    It is possible to start the survey, save responses, and resume the survey later but be sure to use the same survey link on the same computer and browser.  Saving data in the excel validation form also provides a backup should you have issues saving data or have a connectivity issue.

    After completing your responses, but before submitting the survey there is an additional step you will have to take. We require that the senior most Advancement Professional/Chief Advancement Officer reviews and signs off on reported data. Participants are also asked to sign a Data Sharing Agreement (DSA).  The DSA is in place to ensure others do not share results outside of their institution and guarantees that results are only used for benchmarking purposes. Access to benchmarking capabilities will be restricted unless the DSA is completed.

    Once the DSA is signed and sign off is provided, you will be free to submit your data. CASE conducts additional validation and may follow up about any perceived discrepancies. Once the data is validated, CASE will open up access to benchmarking capabilities. In addition, CASE will perform data analysis and write a report on the findings. The report will be distributed to participants and posted on both the CASE and CCAE website.

    All survey participants will receive a complimentary Graphical Program Summary (GPS) report presenting data on 5 key variables, a PDF report of aggregate findings, and can access data in the CASE Benchmarking Toolkit.  Survey participants can also order a Made-to-Order GPS report (view a Sample Made-to-Order Report) presenting data for their institution and a group of 5-10 peers from within the survey population.  The highly inter-active HTML file presents data on 15 variables and enables users to change chart views, review underlying chart data, and download charts for use in presentations.  Made-to-Order reports include a 30-minute call to preview data and a one hour "Review Call" in which an which an AMAtlas staff member walks the client and their team through the full report, identifying strategic questions and insights for discussion.  If you are interested in learning more about made-to-order reports please DBass@CASE.org.

    About the CASE-CCAE Support of Education Survey, Canada

    CASE, in partnership with the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education conducted the first survey of fundraising by Canadian colleges, polytechnics, and universities in 2018 filling a critical need for authoritative data on charitable support for Canadian higher education.

    The report of that survey provided a comprehensive overview of the important role philanthropy plays in supporting Canadian higher education and demonstrated the impact advancement has on students, researchers, and institutions. The forty-eight institutions that participated in the inaugural survey secured over CAN$1.5 billion in private support from over 320,000 individual and institutional donors.

    The survey:

    • Raises the profile of higher education advancement in Canada and increase public understanding of the role of philanthropy in support of education;
    • Provides data to help measure the impact of public policy and inform advocacy initiatives supporting educational advancement in Canada and globally;
    • Enables participating institutions to measure and benchmark fundraising progress year-over-year and among peer institutions;
    • Helps institutional leaders set goals, assess performance, build capacity, and make informed, strategic decisions regarding investments in advancement.

    The survey has been adapted from models used by CASE in the U.K. Europe, Australia, and New Zealand that have become the authoritative source of data on philanthropic support of higher education in those regions.

    Contact research@case.org if you have questions or suggestions regarding the survey or reporting guidelines.
