In October 2017, Pacific University’s office of marketing and communication (MarCom) used the image of a student of color prominently on its homepage. The student was unaware that the photographer was an employee or that his image would be used on the university’s website. Soon thereafter, he would leave the school. MarCom’s use of student images had aggrieved students for many years. This time, they made enough noise that MarCom finally took notice.
