About the Survey

As a part of CASE Insights, the Voluntary Support of Education Survey is now called CASE Insights on Voluntary Support of Education. The CASE Voluntary Support of Education (VSE) survey is the authoritative source of data on giving to higher education institutions in the US with over 65 years of rigorous survey data from over 1,000 institutions.

The 2022 survey collected data for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2021, and ending June 30, 2022 (with a few institutions reporting on different fiscal calendars). Data shown in this report are Funds Received, not pledges or commitments.

Data are presented in a standardized format with minimal analysis. Further analysis can be provided by the CASE Insights team using facilitated cohort groups and including an individualized call with your institution. Contact the CASE Insights Team for more information.

Peer Algorithm

CASE peer groups are based on a combination of core data points from the VSE Survey and additional appended variables.1
An algorithm is used to select the ten institutions most similar to yours based on data for fiscal year 2022. Data used to select the ten institutions most similar to yours are shown on the left by size of weighting in the algorithm and include:

  • Carnegie Classification1
  • Public or Private classification on institution1
  • Presence of a hospital at institution1
  • Support (in dollars) from each Source
  • Percent change in Funds Received (in dollars) from 2021
  • Size of Endowment (in dollars)
  • Number of alumni of record
  • Support (in dollars) to each Purpose
  • Funds Received (in dollars) as a three year average between 2020 and 2022

The visualizations in this report show trends in your institution and institutions similar to yours based purely on the selected data points. Your peer group is not necessarily an academic or aspirational peer group.2

1 Appended variables come from Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) and the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education by Indiana University Center for Postsecondary Research.

2 Scroll down to the Next Steps section for information about selecting your own peer institutions for comparison as well as suggestions about how to implement data-driven strategies using these results.

Cumulative Growth in Funds Received

The 2022 survey has been redesigned to incorporate CASE Global Reporting Standards. In this analysis, the term Total Support has been replaced with Funds Received. Funds Received includes: payments on pledges or recurring gifts, realized bequests that were previously documented, newly established irrevocable deferred gifts (CGA’s, CRTs, Pooled Income Funds, Remainder Interest in Property (Face Value)), new gifts from living individuals that were not previously pledged, and new gifts from realized bequests that were not previously documented.

In Fiscal Year (FY) 2022, Sample Institution increased Funds Received by 14% compared to the previous year. For comparison, 90% of institutions within your CASE Peers and 64% of All Respondents institutions had positive change from the previous year.

This graph examines cumulative percentage change in Funds Received, which was calculated by setting 2018 as the baseline. 2018 is also used as the baseline for CASE Peers and All Respondents.

Data

12 Large Gifts as a Percentage of Funds Received

In 2022, 35.5 percent of Funds Received came from the three largest gifts from each source: bequests, corporations, foundations, and individuals. Please note, Donor Advised Funds are not included because not all institutions could break these out in 2022.

Over time, major gifts have become a larger portion of your institution’s funds raised. Pay careful attention to giving bands to ensure enough donors are continuing to upgrade into mid and major giving levels.
